Fiberboard can be anything, really. It’s the wood that is used to make cabinets in our kitchens, but it also can be a very useful sound board. If you’re interested in learning how to sound board fiberboard then this article will tell you when is the best and worst time to do so. Now that you know this information feel free to get started on your new hobby.


Materials and Tools Needed:

Any good wood. You only need one board. The higher quality the better, but I’ve made many boards with lower quality wood and they still sounded good. Some people like to get the wood from trees that have been struck by lighting, others like to go out and get it themselves. The latter is a bit more fun if you ask me, but it’s your call. Wood must be cut into 1″ strips. You can use a table saw or a circular saw. Get the blade depth down to about 1/2″, and make sure you get a nice clean cut. Do this for however many strips you will need. I like to cut the strips with one board and then play with them and see how they sound. You can determine how thick you want your board to be by the length of the strips. I go for about 45″ x 12″ if it’s to be used in an acoustic guitar. Once you have all of your strips set out, get out some fiberglass resin gause mix, some fiberglass cloth, paper towels, plastic bags, hot glue, resin brush, paint brush or whatever else you may need. The paint brush works well for this. I like to do the fiberglass resin part first, then let it dry, before I do the paper towel stage. The paper towels are what will hold the fiberglass cloth in place. You could use anything really, but the fiberglass cloth is what will surround your fiberglass board. When you put down your first layer of paper towels there will be air pockets between them and the next layer which is what will give your board it’s shape. Once you have your board shaped right then begin laying out that fiberglass cloth around it. You can either lay it over the entire thing that you just made or just start with one side and work your way around until you’re done. Once the paper towels are covered with something like fiberglass cloth you want to place them in a plastic bag, and then put that plastic bag into another one just to protect it. Once all of that is dry then you can remove it from its bags and begin finishing your board. The final step is to cut the holes for the strings, frets, pick guard, etc… Sorry no step by step instructions for this one. I’ve never really had any problems with my boards making them self conscious so I suggest that you do it in an area where no one will bother you or judge you. If your going to make a lot of these boards at once I suggest using a jig of some sort. They are very useful. You can make one for practically any type or kind of board you want to make.

How to get the best sound out of your Fiberboard:

This is a very important part of this article. If you don’t do all of these steps then you will not get the best possible sound out of your fiberboard. First take some fine sandpaper and sand all parts that are going to be touching the wood. I like to do this before I start doing anything else with my board because it gives it a nice smooth surface to sit on when I apply other things like varnish or sealer coats, so it won’t have any bumps in it. After the sanding is done then you should apply some sort of wood conditioner. I’ve used several different ones, but my favorite is one called Pure Wood Conditioner. It’s specific for grains and grains only! I find that it makes my boards sound louder and with better tone. The two most important things to remember are to make sure that it is completely dry after applying the wood conditioner, or you will have no use for your board whatsoever! Once you have applied the wood conditioner make sure that every inch of the board is covered with it. When sanding the board before you put on your finish coat next time sand it lightly just enough so that there is a nice even layer of even sand on all parts of the board.

The next step is to figure out how you want your board to look. I personally tend to just use the back sides of the strips that I have cut that are laying around my house, but if you want it to look nice then there are some great ways. The easiest way is just to use a utility knife and cut out shapes. You can also get very creative with cutting out shapes or designs on them with an X-acto blade or other cutting tools. Another thing that I have done is wrap cotton string around the edges of my boards so when they are in their package they will have a nice custom package to them. If you do this then I suggest that you cut the string, and then make notches in the strings to fit over the holes in your back sides.

The last thing is to fill all of those air pockets between your board and the next layer of paper towels with drywall putty. This will make sure that your boards are as close as possible to touching each other and creating a nice tight seal. If any air pockets still exist they will only harm your sound and performance and cause unwanted business and maybe even some rattling (if it’s serious enough).


What is sound board made of?

Soundboard material consist of two types, fiberboard and plywood. There are several types of wood, but the most common are pine or spruce. You can use other recourses to make your board as well.


What is fiberboard?

Fiberboard are made by laying tiny strands of wood fibers down side by side to make a board. The main thing is that the tiny threads need to match up within .000025″ so that each strand is perfectly straight and lays evenly on top of another strand. This is called a one-ply board, because that’s all you have in it. Just one strand. There are various ways to make fiberboard, but the most common is to place the wood strands in a big machine, and then they flow through several different machines (the board goes through about 60 or more depending on the length of the board), and it’s pressed and squeezed through all this equipment until it comes out on the other side. This is called a “vacuum press”. The board is then rolled up and placed into a big giant oven that heats up to about 350° and then keeps it there for about 4 days. The heat makes the fibers hot so they will react when you add resins onto them so when you put your resin on top of them it will flow thru all of them evenly. Sometimes fiberboard are made without the resin, but it is always better to have one with the resin because it will help out your board a lot more.

What is plywood?

Plywood is made by laying down layers of wood together. The most common type of plywood that you can get at your home improvement stores are just 1 or 2 plies, but there are other types that have up to 6 plies. The most common woods used for making plywood are balsa (very light wood), spruce, and pine (in order of weight). The more plies you add the denser the plywood will be. The most common uses for plywood are in making cabinets, tables or furniture, and also in making instrument backs.

What is hardboard?

Hardboard is to wood what concrete is to bricks. It’s made by applying a binder to a wood chip product then laying it into a mold and heating it up. The binder melts and then hardens into a board that can be used for all kinds of things such as bookshelves or cabinets. On the sides of instruments you will find many instruments use hardboard because they are very sturdy and durable.


How to make a fingerboard?


First you need a fingerboard blank. This is the part of the instrument where your finger will rest on it. You can make a fingerboard from a hardwood piece of wood from any of your woods, from what you have cut out already, or from an old piece of wood that has been laying around for years. The first thing to do is take some fine sandpaper and sand down the surface that will be touching your finger. You want to make sure that there are no ridges or bumps on it so it will slide smoothly across your finger as you play.

Next you want to drill a hole in the center of your fingerboard. Make sure that it is deep enough so that your nail will rest inside of it, but it’s not so deep that your nail can actually go all the way through and into the wood where there is no hole. Make sure that you use a drill bit and take your time and don’t force anything! There are several different types of nails: brads, flush nails, and split pins. All three will hold their place on the fingerboard better than just about anything. The brads and flush nails fit the most securely of the three, but the split pins fit best for use with a hammer on your bass. Brads like to catch on the end of your finger or on your hand and if you hit or whack at them they will sometimes bend out of place. Split pins are made out of metal and they don’t bend out of place no matter what, but they can seem to pop off at any time. As far as I know, all of these types will work perfectly fine on both electric and acoustic basses, and some people like use them all equally while others only use one type. The thing is; its better to have too many than not enough.

how to install sound board strap? Sound board is the material that you will be placing your tone woods on. Sound boards can be made with plywood, hardboard, or with fiberboard. If you are going with fiberboard then it will need to be covered with a thin layer of wood, such as spruce or baltic birch. Most people use plywood and most companies will sell the back and top wood ready for you to place your side pieces on them. The simplest way of making a sound board is to use plys of wood and lacquer them together so they won’t break apart when straping it down. The most popular type of soundboards are metal, but you can also get them made out of fiberboard.

How to bind the neck on the guitar?

This is something that I had to learn how to do when I was just starting out with bass. The process is pretty simple. Begin by taking your finish off of your neck and removing all the material around it so you have just about nothing protecting it. You don’t want anything protecting it because then you won’t be able to wash or clip it! You then need to wet this neck down with acetone or some other form of nail polish remover and let it dry for at least 10 minutes. After it is dry, take the sandpaper and sand off any ridges or bumps that you find. This can really help with making sure your neck looks nice. After this step, you need to stain the neck. I used three coats of anti-static spray because it gets pretty much all of the dust and dirt off of it. The spray I used was called “blue genius”, but you can use any brand that seems good to you. After sanding down the neck again, you then need to sand down all of your finish.

A particle board works really well for soundproofing because it is thick and the wood fibers are dense. To make them not break apart you can use a product called “glue”. You can get this at your home improvement store. This is something that I use all the time because my neighbors are really loud. It doesn’t really break apart so I don’t have to worry about it breaking apart on its own. The particle board is something that you can buy at your home improvement store or you can make it yourself. I made my own by cutting up pieces of damaged wood that was laying around the house. This is something that will go across the whole wall, but you can also put it up in the ceiling if you are doing soundproofing for your ceiling.


How does a particle board work for strengthening?

A particle board will help strengthen things because they are made out of wood fibers and if its big enough then it might even help strengthen metal too. It will depend on the size of the particle board. If it is a lot smaller then you can use a piece of wood on its own and use a heavy duty stapler to attach it to the particle board. If its not really small enough then you can put some brads on it and staple them down. This would be something that I would only do on floors because particle boards don’t really grow very well. The ones that I have seen in stores are not very big and they do break apart.


How does a particle board work for an acoustic guitar soundboard?

A particle board that is used for an acoustic guitar soundboard will be able to help the sound of your guitar. It works really well with guitars because of how dense and stiff they can make the board. The way I like to use it is I like to get a piece of wood and put it on top of my fiberboard and then cover both of them with two coats of lacquer. This helps spread the sound all over the room so everyone can hear when I’m playing. You can also put in small pieces throughout your entire model so all around you are hearing better sounds when you are playing an acoustic guitar. You can also use them to keep your guitar from moving around in storage. This is helpful if you are using acoustic guitars because they do get bumped around quite a bit when they are in storage because of the size. They will be able to stay put if you use the particle board. You do need to make sure that you put them in properly or else they could fall off or break away from your guitar soundboard!
